How to Create Digital Product Passports

Discover the five essential steps to seamlessly implement Digital Product Passports and ensure your brand stays ahead of new regulations with the expert guidance of Blue Bite.

September 24, 2024

In an earlier blog post, we broke down what Digital Product Passports are and how their implementation is changing the way consumers access information about a product’s origin, composition, materials, recyclability and more.

With new regulations coming to pass, we want to help brands better prepare for this change and understand the technical lift required for creating and implementing Digital Product Passports. As your Connected Product Experts, Blue Bite can support you every step of the way—from initial consultation to launch.

Here are five steps for understanding how to set up Digital Product Passports for your brand:

Step 1: Consultation

It’s important to outline your brand’s goals and priorities for implementing Digital Product Passports, and that all starts with an initial consultation. Our Connected Product experts will evaluate your objectives to better define the scope of the project, including design preferences, language requirements, and product selection.

The consultation will give you a better understanding of what data is required, the cost of implementation, the timeline, and more. It will also give you the chance to get to know us and the depth of our services. The consultation helps us understand where you are on your connected product journey so we can meet you there and help move you forward.

Step 2: Identify the Source of Truth

Digital Product Passports need a source of truth where vital data is stored and pulled from. This means that each SKU or style code is connected to information such as country of production, presence of recycled materials, microplastics, and hazardous materials. We’ll work with you to ensure your Source of Truth contains all the necessary information to comply with laws and regulations.

Your data can be in the form of an excel file, an ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) software, a PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) software, or a CMS (Content Management Software). If your team does not have this data in order, Blue Bite can help create a system for managing the data that’s relevant for creating your Digital Product Passports.

Step 3: Create Digital Product Passports

Once all the data is in order, we can design your Digital Product Passports for you based on your brand guidelines or we can provide your design team with templates to choose from. The templates are easy to use and don’t require any coding.

At this stage, we’ll also provide you with options for hardware partners and start the process of connecting our suppliers with your manufacturers to ensure they receive the right connecting technology in time for implementation.

Step 4: Launch

The hard part is over. Now it’s time to sit back and watch your products come to life! During the launch phase, your QR codes or NFC tags are activated and once scanned or tapped will be directed to the appropriate experience.

Step 5: Repeat

Once your brand has successfully launched a flagship product, it’s now time to expand this process to other collections and products. We’ve found once a company has gone through the process of creating Digital Product Passports for one product or collection it becomes easier and faster to onboard different products to your connected product platform.
